  • Create a game plan to live a ‘rich life’ today and in the future (hello, retirement!)

Life is more fun when you and your partner are on the same page!

It’s easier to grow together (and get through bumps in the road) when you know what you’re working toward.

Once you know your goal, you can work backward to plan the steps and finances to reach it 👏

It’s like making a vision board for your life together!

We’ve been doing this for 19 years

Planning our future together is an amazing bonding experience, and helped shape our financial future.

It started when we were dirt-poor - he was making $13,000 a year, and I was just going back to school.

In 2008, a friend laughed at our dumpy 425-square-foot apartment

But I didn’t care, because it was just a stepping stone.

We had the vision of what we were creating, and cheap rent meant we had money to fund our future.

It’s how we turned our goals into reality. Here are the steps so you can do it too!

Start the conversation

This is your chance to dream big and have fun!

Find a chill moment (maybe over dinner or while walking the dog) and ease into it.

You can start the conversation with something like, “I’ve been thinking about what I want our life to look like in the future. I’d love to hear what you picture for us!”

Conversation starters

The big picture

  • Where do we picture ourselves living in 5, 10, or 20 years?

  • Where do we see ourselves living?

  • What does success look like for us?

  • How do we want to spend our time, both together and on our own?

  • What experiences matter most to us?

  • What does an ideal vacation look like to us?

Retirement

  • What do you picture for retirement?

  • When do you want to retire?

  • Do you want to be snowbirds? Where will our “winter base” be?

Careers and work

  • How do we want work to fit into our lives?

  • What’s our ideal work-life balance?

  • What would make us feel truly fulfilled in our careers?

Family and relationships

  • What kind of relationships do we want with family and friends?

  • If you don’t have kids - Do we want kids? If so, what kind of upbringing do we imagine?

  • How do we support each other’s growth and personal goals?

Everyday life

  • What does an ideal day look like for us?

  • What routines or activities help us feel happy and connected?

  • How do we make sure we’re having fun and not just checking off to-do lists?

Make it real

Once you have an idea of what you want life to look like, it’s time to figure out how to get there.

You can say something like, “I love where this is headed. Let’s see what steps we can take to actually make this happen!”

Set goals

Short-term: What can we do this year to move closer to our vision?

(Example: Learning new skills, adjusting work schedules, prioritizing certain expenses)

Long-term: What major milestones do we need to prepare for?

(Example: Buying a home, achieving financial independence, planning for extended travel)

Enjoy the ride

This isn’t just about reaching some distant future. You want to enjoy life along the way!

  • How will we have fun while working toward our goals?

  • How do we celebrate progress?

  • How can we stay flexible and adapt if things change?

Keep checking in

As life goes on, you’ll want to revisit the plan so you stay on a path that makes sense as you both grow and change.

  • Set a time to check in - maybe once a year or during big life transitions

  • Share about how your needs and priorities may have shifted

  • Adjust your goals to stay in sync with where you both are now

  • Stay open, supportive, and excited about what’s next

After your conversation, jot down some key takeaways - shared goals, things to work on, and fun ideas to bring into your daily life.

You can keep coming back to this vision and updating it as life happens!

Now you’re on the same page!

You and your partner know where you’re headed and have a plan to get there.

Decisions are easier, there’s less stress, and you’re moving forward as a team.

Even taking “risks” feels less risky because you see how they fit into your goals.

We moved across the country, started a business, and stretched our budget to buy a house. Even though it was scary, we saw the payoff and how it fit our plans.

And you can figure out the money to make it happen

For example, one of our goals is to spend the winters in Portugal once we retire.

The budget to rent a place each winter is something we’ve factored into our financial and investment plan.

We had fun visiting cities in the south of Portugal last year to get “into the groove” and enjoy life now!
